com’>Paul Gores of the Journal Sentinel Posted: Nov. 27 2007 A Thanksgiving weekend telephone scam in which customers of a Manitowoc bank were urged to call a toll-free number and turn over their personal information already has resulted in some accounts being cleaned out by thieves in Spain. Bank First National said it doesn’t know yet how many customers gave up private data or how much has been drained from accounts. But it turns out the carefully timed automated dialing scheme – conducted during a period when people were at home for the holiday rather than at work – called 40000 numbers largely in Manitowoc County and got 20000 people to pick up the phone. In the scam people were told their bank accounts were suspended and that they should call a number to have them reinstated. When they called they were asked to give private information such as account numbers and personal identification numbers for debit cards.
