Shopping scam targeting the elderly

The alert comes after several incidents involving telephone calls from someone claiming to work for South xfordshire District Council (SDC). The caller asked to carry out shopping as part of aspecial service offered by the authority. Trading Standards officers were made aware and contacted SDC. The council then confirmed it was not connected to these calls. It added that it the only shopping service it offered was contractedto a company called Montclair which does not cold call clients in that way.

• Watch for two IRS notices: Most taxpayers will receive two notices from the IRS. ne will explain the stimulus payment program and another will confirm the recipients’ eligibility payment amount and approximate timetable for the payment. Be alert for tax rebate scams such as telephone calls or e-mails claiming to be from the IRS and asking for sensitive financial information. The IRS does not call or e-mail taxpayers about payments nor will it ask for financial information. Scam e-mails and information about scam calls should be forwarded by e-mail to.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Debbie George says the e-mail is bogus. "It was sent out claiming to be from Suffolk First Bank instructing recipients to contact a telephone number" she said. “It is a pretty clever scam scamming you under the guise of ‘We’re protecting you from a scam. ‘" Police say the person on the other end of the phone has tried to get information from several people. Investigators were made aware of the situation on Saturday when a person called after receiving the e-mail and calling the listed number. Darrell Swanigan President of Suffolk First Bank and his staff acted quiclky after receiving calls from customers and non-customers from across the country questioning the email.

Johns CountyNew scam reported: Investigators at the St. Johns County Sheriff’s ffice have received about a dozen complaints in recent days from residents saying they are being solicited by con artists claiming to be collecting money for various law enforcement agencies according to Sgt. Mulligan said while some of the solicitors might be legitimate others have detectives suspicious. “All of these things should be questioned” Mulligan said. “Folks should be aware that these scam artists go about their business thinking of creative stories that make you believe it or buy into it.
