Text messages from China mobile-phone numbers are increasingly appealing for donations to help disaster victims. A similar scam is festering in China where police have arrested eight people in Guizhou who sent fake messages asking for money The Straits Times said. The SMS messages written in Chinese appeared to be sent from three different mobile numbers registered in China but the messages were identical the report said. The same Bank of China account number for deposits was also given.

SEC considering action against Greenberg

in the aftermath of a judge’s finding that an insurance scam began with a phone conversation between Greenberg and another insurance executive. The SEC late last week sent Greenberg a “Wells notice” which indicates a possibility of an enforcement action. The notice comes in the wake of a jury conviction of four former General Reinsurance Corp. executives and a former AIG executive of conspiracy and securities fraud. The executives were charged in an insurance scheme that purported to transfer risk from Gen Re to AIG but in fact inflated by $500 million the reserves AIG reported available to pay claims.
