The calls are coming from two telephone numbers from Quebec Canada. When answered a recording states the caller is calling on behalf of Farmers-Merchants National Bank said Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane.

But before you give beware of scams disguised as reputable charities. Hinds County Sheriff and Jackson Police Chief Malcolm McMillin says he's gotten calls from numerous residents who have fallen victim to a telemarketing scam. The caller told them they were giving to the Fraternal rder of Police at JPD or the Hinds County Sheriff's Reserve. Neither legitimate organization does any fund raising by phone. “So we want to tell the public to make sure where they're giving contributions” says McMillin. “That this telemarketer does not represent the police department nor does this telemarketer represent the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

Most of the calls have been claiming to be from Home Valley Bank advising that the recipient’s card has been suspended and needs to be re-activated. Police are advising residents to not respond to the message as it is a confirmed scam. Home Valley Bank is aware of the incidents and is in no way involved. The call back number given in the automated message appears to be from out of the area and randomly chosen.

The fraudulent callers from outside the area are apparently trying to gain access to bank accounts; they also charge the long-distance phone calls to the victim’s bill. Phone service provider Frontier along with the Sheriff’s Department have released the following tips: Call Forwarding Scam:•o Your telephone rings and the caller asks you to dial a 2-digit code preceded or followed by the * or # key (such as *79 or 72#) and then another phone number in order to claim a prize. •o ften the caller claims to be a telephone company technician who is testing the line but he or she has the same “dialing” request•o A similar scam may have the caller asking you to dial 90#. •o Dialing these codes programs your telephone to forward your calls to another number usually a long distance number. •o Scammers can then call your number be forwarded to the number you dialed and place calls that are billed to your home telephone number all without your knowledge or consent. •o If this happens to you immediately dial the “cancel call forwarding” code for your telephone (such as *73 or 73#). This will stop all incoming calls to your phone from being forwarded to a long distance number.
