The scam usually involves a caller who contacts residents oftentimes at night claiming to be a relative in need of money police said. Several people have come forward recently and said they’ve fallen for the scam community service officer Mike Leonard of the Redding Police Department said Wednesday. He said one victim lost $6000. The person first sent out $4000 through Western Union and gave another $2000 when the caller asked for more money. To fool the victim the caller often makes the person guess who’s calling.

Elderly residents have received calls from people claiming to represent the Las Vegas Treasury Department. The caller claims the resident has won a large sum of money and requests that they transfer a proportionally smaller amount via Western Union to claim their “winnings. ” The victim may be provided with a “case number” as well as a toll-free telephone number to call. This scam is similar to others in the past including one of the more notable involving callers claiming to represent the Canadian Lottery. At this time none of the Naperville victims has lost money. If you have been the victim of such a fraud or have received a telephone call of this nature please contact the Naperville Police Department to file a report at 630-420-6665.

He said he received a complaint from a daughter of an elderly resident of Clark’s Trailer Park. The woman reported her mother had received a call from a person claiming to represent Tidewater il. Tidewater il is a legitimate company doing business in Belfast but Kelley said he contacted officials there and learned they do not solicit customers. Kelley said the call began with a recorded message that thanked the recipient for his or her business.

Since Monday police have received “numerous calls” from area residents reporting that they’ve received the phone call according to Lt. “An automated voice identifies itself as being from the Service Credit Union and advises that your account has been put on hold and then requests that you enter your account number” said MacDonald in a recent press release. Although information into the fraud attempts is limited at this time MacDonald said it is currently under investigation and police are recommending anyone who receives a similar call to not enter any account information.
