fficer Gary Wikman investigated a complaint last week from a local woman who said she received a recorded message supposedly from the IRS telling her there was a problem with her account and to call an “800″ phone number. When the women called the number a set of recorded instructions led her through a number of options including asking the caller to enter her Social Security number and her address. “This is all general information they can use to get into your financial accounts” Wikman said of the scammer. “It’s unlimited what they can get into with that.

We called the number and here’s the automated message we heard. “This is the Federal Trade Commission. The telephone number you’re calling has been disconnected because it may be involved in a scam. “No surprise either for Dennis Horton with the Better Business Bureau that’s received a number of phone calls and emails like this one from concerned consumers. “It’s essentially a fishing scam. They’re trying to get you to give them information to access your account” Director Dennis Horton said. Horton says scam artists are also fishing around saying they’re from Nextel and Nicor.

The banking industry says if anyone is unsure about a call they should phone the bank back on a recognised number from a statement or bank card. ‘Continuous’ scamAbout twenty customers in the Highlands lost money after fraudulent calls were made over a six month period. They were tricked into giving telephone banking details which allowed the fraudsters to transfer money into other accounts and withdraw it. Detective Constable Stephen McCabe from the Northern Constabulary told BBC Radio 4’s Money Box some have lost considerable sums: “This is a scam that goes around on a fairly continuous basis. “Some of the losses are in excess of between £10000 and £20000. ” Not straightforwardThere are guidelines for how banks should indentify themselves if they make an unsolicited call drawn up by the British Bankers Association (BBA) and the Information Commissioner’s ffice.

The caller also gave a contract number and stated she was from a company called Medical Direct Intent. The caller ID displayed was (800) 891-7636. The police say there are many phone scams and typially the goal is to get people to reveal personal infomrationn bank account information or to make you do something that will result in unwanted charges on your bank accounts. Police urge the public to use caution when giving personal or financial information over the telephone. If you receive a phone call requesting this type of information do not give it out and try to get the caller’s name phone number and company name if possible and report the scam immediately. If you feel you have been the victim of a phone scam report the incident to the Provincetown Police at (508) 487-1212.

–> Sun 2009-01-11 09:14. Local News Early last month there was a phone scam circulating across BC and Canada involving vehicle warranty extension and now it seem a similar scam is on the rise. Mark Jan Vrem manager of media relations for ICBC says that their customers have been receiving telephone calls both live an automated stating that their vehicle insurance had expired and that they need to renew by making an immediate credit card payment over the phone. Similar calls have been reported in other provinces and it appears to be part of a nation wide telephone scam.

If you receive this type of call hang up immediately. If you have already received this type of call and provided your personal information please contact your local police the release said. Caller IDs indicate the calls are coming from various parts of the U. including Connecticut Pennsylvania New Jersey Wyoming and Maryland. As with any suspect telephone solicitation personal or financial information should never be given to the caller the release said.
