The 85-year-old woman received a telephone call from the person who claimed to be in trouble with police in Canada police said. The suspect told the woman she needed to wire him $2500 so he could make bail police said. The woman purchased a Western Union money order for $2500 and gave the receipt number to the suspect’s alleged bail bondsman police said. The woman later learned her grandson was not in Canada. Back in January a 68-year-old Atlantic-area woman was duped into wiring more than $6000 to someone posing as her grandson police said.

In the latest incident Capt. Michael Bowen said the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s ffice received a report Wednesday of an automated phone call purportedly from Kalamazoo County State Bank that tells the calls’ recipient their credit card information may have been compromised. Bowen said the automated message instructs the person on the other end of the line to call a specific phone number where they are then asked to enter their credit-card number and security code.

Police say residents have been receiving after-hours phone calls from someone who claims to work for the Burlingame water department. The imposter tells them they can pay their water bills with a credit card and asks them to provide their account information. “These calls are bogus” police said in a statement. City workers do not call residents after 5 p.

They are then prompted to enter personal information usually an account number and possibly a PIN for an ATM card. “We already know their account numbers so there would be no reason to ask” Markwell said. In fact neither MAX nor any other financial institution should ask for that type of information in a phone call or through an e-mail he said. The scam artists were able to mask their real phone number using software that makes it appear to caller ID systems that the calls are coming from legitimate numbers. Whenever MAX security officials were able to shut down one number another would pop up. “These folks are relentless” Markwell said. “We do everything we can to protect our members’ accounts.
Police issue warning about possible scam

- Canton police are warning citizens of a possible telephone scam that has been reported to them. According to police reports a couple on the north end of Canton received a telephone call from a person claiming to be a police officer from Canada and another time claimed to be working with the FBI. The alleged officer told the couple that their grandson had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and they needed to send money for bail and attorney fees. After receiving repeated calls to the house soliciting money from the couple they realized they were being scammed. But the couple was out about $3000.

The callers offer free telephone services then ask the resident for their dates of birth and social security numbers. The calls are not coming from Nicholville Telephone Company or their agents police say. Anyone receiving one of the calls is asked to call the Nicholville Telephone Company at 328-4411 or State Police in Winthrop at 389-5010. The public is reminded to be careful about giving out personally identifying information that could be used to steal your identity.
