In the past 24 hours Holland senior citizens have been receiving calls from someone claiming the residents’ grandchildren have been involved in a serious accident and need money immediately. The callers who are listing the residents’ grandchildren by name describe how and where to wire money to cover the fictional expenses. Holland police are encouraging anybody who receives such a call to confirm the health of family members named by the caller. fficers ask anyone who has been a victim of the scam to file a police report and call police at 616-355-1100 or Silent bserver at 616-392-4443.

The scam involves an automated call that states that your credit card or account may have been compromised and asks for account or credit card PIN numbers according to the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department. You are then directed to push different numbers for various services. The message instructs them to call a return phone number with area code 951 which goes to an unrelated business. This scam is not isolated to Gallatin County and has been reported in other states according to Bozeman Lt. McLane said no area residents that have reported the scam have divulged information to the scammers. Police advise people receiving these calls to not give any information and do not return any phone calls.

The caller informs the listener there has been a security breach to their credit or debit card. The listener is instructed to press “1″ to reach the security department and then instructed to enter their bank account routing number. According to Delphi Police Chief Justin Darling the calls are not legitimate and should be ignored. The listener should give no response and disconnect the line.

f the 116 cell phones and 111 bank accounts obtained by the ring through the method between April 2008 to March one phone and 28 bank accounts are believed to have been sold to a telephone scam group. js’>Suzuki is quoted as saying "I sold the cell phones and bank accounts [obtained through the method] to telephone scam groups for several tens of thousands of yen. "According to the MPD Suzuki and other suspects produced forged health insurance cards at a cell phone shop in Nakano Ward as identification and tried to buy four cell phones from the shop. The suspects sought people willing to become an "adopted child" via the Internet since around April 2008 and recruited eight people according to the MPD official. The eight and Suzuki then were reportedly adopted by a 67-year-old male employee of a sauna who has been indicted for falsifying electronic notarized documents and using them. Shortly before and after making the adoption arrangements the suspects had the "children" make Basic Residents' Registration Network (Juki Net) cards and health insurance cards under their real names and new names.
