) Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is advising insurance agents throughout the state to be wary of telephone imposters posing as insurance department regulators in order to obtain confidential personal information. Several state insurance departments (not including Kansas) have reported incidents of persons calling insurance producers and representing themselves as employees of that state's insurance department. Commissioner Praeger says “These scammers have then threatened cancellation or suspension of the agents' licenses for filing improper paperwork. They want the agents to give them Social Security credit card and telephone numbers as well as birth dates to ?rectify' the situation. ” Insurance departments in klahoma Idaho Nevada and California have reported such scam attempts.

People who gave their phone numbers to a company offering discount travel packages are now being called and asked for credit card information in order to process a discount Carribean cruise. Festivals Kelowna rented booth space to the travel company which appears to have simply sold the phone list. Executive Director Renata Mills says they aren't impressed. "Its certainly made us aware of this organization and how they operate" says Mills. "If this is their sales technique that's not a good thing!"Experts advise against giving out credit card information over the telephone unless you know exactly how it will be used.

“If you didn’t solicit it don’t trust it. ”Taylor said sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Chason was contacted earlier this week by an acquaintance who advised she had been targeted by a male telephone caller purporting to be a representative of the local Wal-Mart Supercenter. “She was told she had won a $100 gift card for gas and other purchases for using her credit card at Wal-Mart” Taylor said. “This scam’s going to snag a few people because it’s true people use their credit card at Wal-Mart. ”After being informed of her winnings the caller asked the woman to provide her credit card number for the purpose of “a $5 processing fee” required to collect her gift card according to the sheriff. “Fortunately she was smart enough not to fall for it” Taylor said.
