EMC says beware of phone ‘bill’ scam
The Citizen.com
In this latest scheme the perpetrators contact EMC consumers informing victims that the government is paying $350 toward the electric bills of senior citizens. The caller claims that in order to process the check he or she needs social security numbers and EMC account numbers. If the scam artist obtains this information ? including credit card numbers ? he or she will call the EMC member a few minutes later to “verify” the information. This attempt to defray suspicion also gives criminals more time to use the data to make fraudulent purchases.

The scam is being committed over the telephone by a caller who claims to be a representative of the Gladstone Water Department. Upon answering the call the water customer is told they have forgotten to sign their check for a water bill. They are then told that a credit card number must be given for payment or water service will be shut off. According to a press release the Gladstone Water Department will never call and ask customers for a credit card number. The department does not accept credit card payments.
