The scam works likes this police explain:The perpetrators first call to determine the age of the victim by asking for the listed name in the phone book or by using the Wide World Network online directories fficer Jason Freiberger said. When told that the person is deceased the perpetrators then assume that the victim who answered the phone is an elderly person. The perpetrators then end the call only to call again some time later while posing as a grandchild in need of money usually because of some type of accident Freiberger said. — Macedon police are warning of a new telephone scam that preys on potential victims’ concern for a loved one. Macedon Police Chief John Colella said about a dozen residents have reported receiving calls originating from Canada telling them that their grandson was hurt in a car accident and they needed to wire about $3000 to a hospital before he could be released. “They are instilling fear in people as a means of getting money” Colella said of the scammers. In at least three cases Colella said the scammers provided victims with the correct name of their relative. The scam seems to be targeting older residents he said with eight of the complaints coming from the Parkwood Heights senior living community.

Resist the urge to enter foreign lotteries. It’s illegal to play a foreign lottery through the mail or the telephone and most foreign lottery solicitations are phony. Recent scams have appeared locally. Know with whom you are dealing and never wire money to strangers.
