Some other telephone numbers that have been affiliated with this scam are 415-200-0273 415-200-0272 and 940-817-1205. These phone numbers appear to be prepaid cellular phones that are routed from overseas.

The resident was told that a local FBI agent would be contacting them with a secret code number which would entitle them to a large sum of money. The FBI would pay 95 percent of the taxes and the victim would be responsible for 5 percent or several thousand dollars. In this scam the citizen is asked to pay $2500.

Through investigation contact made with the Discover Card Security Department it was found that the given card number was identified for excessive and unusual charges and they were watching it. With this report they would be making contact with the card owner. Discover Card Security Service identified that this is the newest scam theft they have been encountering. The scam works likes this police explain:The perpetrators first call to determine the age of the victim by asking for the listed name in the phone book or by using the Wide World Network online directories fficer Jason Freiberger said. When told that the person is deceased the perpetrators then assume that the victim who answered the phone is an elderly person. The perpetrators then end the call only to call again some time later while posing as a grandchild in need of money usually because of some type of accident Freiberger said. In the most recent incident a perpetrator posing as a grandchild told the elderly person that he was in an accident and that he was being detained until bail is posted Freiberger said.

The telephone threats are fraudulent but the personal information the scammers use is very real. The victims are contacted by fake lawyers with a fake collection agency demanding immediate payment. “They’re telling them that if they don’t have a thousand dollars within an hour because they defaulted on the payday loan then they’re going to be arrested and extradited to California” said Dottie Callina of the Atlanta branch of the BBB. “So the consumers get really upset and (the scammers) tell them they need to wire the money immediately.
